Every business owner knows that keeping an existing customer is far cheaper than finding a new one. But most small shops in Nigeria have no system for rewarding loyal customers — and as a result, customers who could have come back every week drift to competitors.
The good news is that you don't need a fancy loyalty card programme or an expensive points system to make this work. PosWolf's built-in loyalty campaign feature lets you reward returning customers with a simple QR code on their receipt — and it takes about 5 minutes to set up.
Why loyalty matters for small businesses
Think about your own buying habits. If two shops sell the same product at the same price, but one gives you a discount every time you come back, which one do you choose?
Research consistently shows that customers who feel rewarded are:
- More likely to return within 30 days
- More likely to spend more on each visit
- More likely to recommend the shop to others
Even a small reward — 5% off their next purchase — can be the difference between a customer coming back to you or going elsewhere.
How PosWolf's loyalty campaigns work
PosWolf uses QR codes instead of physical loyalty cards. Here's the flow:
- Customer makes a purchase. A QR code is printed at the bottom of their receipt automatically.
- Customer saves the receipt (or takes a photo of the QR code).
- On their next visit, the cashier scans the QR code at checkout.
- The reward is applied — a discount is deducted from their total automatically.
- A new QR code is printed on the new receipt, and the cycle continues.
No app for the customer to download. No card to carry. Just a QR code on a receipt.
Setting up your first campaign
Step 1: Create a campaign
In PosWolf, go to Campaigns in the left sidebar, then click New Campaign.
Give your campaign a name — something like "Thank You Discount" or "Returning Customer Reward."
Step 2: Set your reward
Choose between:
- Fixed amount — e.g. ₦200 off their next purchase
- Percentage — e.g. 5% off their next purchase
Start conservatively. Even ₦100 off feels meaningful to many customers, especially for low-ticket purchases.
Step 3: Activate and test
Turn the campaign on. Make a test sale and check the receipt — the QR code should appear at the bottom.
Ask a colleague to bring the receipt back and scan the QR code at the checkout screen. The discount should apply automatically.
How to tell if it's working
PosWolf's Campaign Analytics page shows you:
- Total QR codes issued — how many receipts went out with the code
- Total redemptions — how many came back and used it
- Redemption rate — what percentage of customers returned
A redemption rate of 10–20% is a healthy start for most small shops. If you're seeing lower numbers, consider increasing the reward slightly or making sure cashiers are actively mentioning the code to customers at checkout.
Tips to maximise your redemption rate
Tell customers about it. Don't just print the QR code silently — have your cashiers say: "There's a discount code at the bottom of your receipt for next time." This one sentence can double your redemption rate.
Make the reward meaningful. ₦50 off a ₦2,000 purchase doesn't feel exciting. But ₦200 off does. Know your average transaction value and offer something that feels like a real reward.
Print clearly. Make sure your receipt printer produces a clear, scannable QR code. Test it with your phone camera before going live.
Time it right. If your business has a seasonal pattern (busier at month-end, for example), consider launching your campaign at the start of that period.
The bigger picture
A loyalty campaign is one of the cheapest forms of marketing available to a small business. You're not spending money to find new customers — you're spending a tiny amount to keep the ones you already have.
A customer who visits your shop twice a month instead of once is worth double to you — and it cost you nothing to acquire them a second time.
Set up your first campaign today. You might be surprised how quickly your regulars start to notice — and come back.
